Digital Video Recorders
Digital video recorders are devices that can record CCTV images on hard drives based storage units, in place of conventional video tapes. The analogue pictures which are captured by most of CCTV cameras offer low clarity when used on regular video tape recorders. However digital recorders convert the analogue pictures generated by the CCTV cameras and compress them to digital images. This generates videos of better quality and improves the efficiency, as well. It is also possible to remotely access the live footages from multiple CCTV cameras, from the camera site via the internet.
CCTV digital video recorders are available as standalone digital recorders and as PC based models.
Stand Alone Digital Recorders
As the name suggests, these stand alone set top boxes can be used on their own, without having to be connected to a computer. The CCTV images are recorded directly on to hard disks of the recorder. These recorders come with embedded software such as Linux or other simple machine based languages, which are considered to be much more stable than the regular Windows OS.
PC based digital Recorders
The PC based digital recorders are nothing but ordinary PCs which have been altered by incorporating additional software and hardware, to record live videos from the CCTV cameras. The CCTV images are recorded directly on the hard disk of the PC via the PCI slot on the computer. The recording is done directly to the Hard Disk Drive or the network drive of the PC.
