A comparison of CCTV recording devices
The images captured by CCTV cameras can be recorded using different types of recording devices, based on your specific requirement and budget.
Time elapsed VCRs and multiplexers (analogue CCTV) have been the most common method of recording CCTV images until the advent of digital video recorders lately. In analogue CCTV, the images captured by the different CCTV cameras will be split by the multiplexer and sent to a time elapse video recorder. The recorder records up to 960 hours of footage on 3 hour long video cassettes. Although the clarity and picture quality of this kind of recording devices are comparatively lower, they are still used in low budget CCTV installations.
Digital Video Recorders (DVR), on the other hand, provide pictures of excellent clarity and far higher resolution. Computer hard disks are used to store the recorded footages and an embedded operating system is used to control the various functions of the digital recorder. There are DVRs with built in motion-detection technology as well. These kinds of CCTV systems record the images only when it detects any kind of motion or movement. There are also those that can be connected to ADSLs (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines) for remote access to the recorded data. The DVRs offer more storage space, increased speed and better accessibility of the recorded information. They are also less cumbersome, and much easier to handle than the analogue CCTV systems.
